Artist Bio
Lawrence Morelli is a passionate figure and landscape painter based in New Haven, CT. He is also a fabulous story teller but that doesn't go under an artist bio, or does it?
He is a practicing painter, who has a studio at Erector Square in New Haven and he belongs to Kehler-Liddell Gallery in Westville. As an Adjunct Instructor at Norwalk Community College, he teaches Drawing I and Figure Drawing.
He currently lives in downtown New Haven and he was born in Brooklyn, New York. When he’s not teaching or exhibiting, you can usually find him in his art studio.
Lawrence Morelli paints emotionally charged, powerfully gestural portraits. He uses Polaroids which function at a couple of levels. They are a means, according to Morelli, of “getting the image down.” In addition, the photos aid in stimulating Morelli’s memory over the period of time required to produce his paintings beyond the live sittings. Not the memory of incidental details, rather the memory of the emotional setting that characterizes the moment.
